ICT companies invited to join in e-Government project
NIO Minister Ian Pearson has launched new guidelines for the initiation of e-Government Pilot Projects in the Stormont Hotel, Belfast, today.
The event, hosted by the sectoral representative body of the ICT industry, Momentum, outlined how private sector companies could submit ideas on how the government could do business in the 21st Century by taking advantage of modern technology.
Mr Pearson said: "The new Pilot Projects initiative pushes the boundaries of what we in government normally do and I am sure that the opportunities these guidelines present to ICT companies to engage with government here in Northern Ireland will result in new, really innovative ways of delivering government services.
Mr Pearson also emphasised that ‘joining-up’ public services was a major priority as government reshapes its services across traditional departmental boundaries and targets delivery to the citizen, highlighting the fact that technology itself is now a key enabler in the all important transformation process.
The government has established a target for Northern Ireland that all of its key services should be capable of electronic delivery by 2005.
The e-Government Pilot Project has been created to contribute towards meeting that goal.
Referring to the need for successful co-operation and partnerships, the Minister continued: "The ‘freeing-up’ of both government and provider to initiate and develop new ideas will be one area which I strongly believe will reap substantial rewards for us all over the years to come."
He added: “The companies involved will be able to demonstrate their capability to deliver practical innovative solutions and develop products and services which will be marketable beyond these shores. Indeed, such successes will make for profitable business and an improved overall knowledge based economy here in Northern Ireland.”
Helen Roulston, Chairman of the Northern Ireland ICT Federation, Momentum, said: "The e-government programme is a major initiative that, once completed, will affect every citizen in Northern Ireland and there are many opportunities for ICT-related companies to design new products and services that will help the e-government programme materialise."

Government reaffirm e-farming pledge
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to using electronic services, such as the Rural Portal and APHIS Online, to ease the regulatory burden on farmers. Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson made his statement to developing electronic services during a visit to Greenmount Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise.

Price Of New Homes Plummet
The cost of buying a new home in Northern Ireland has fallen by over 7% since last year. The latest NI Housing Bulletin, just published, said that with year-on comparisons the average selling price of National House Building Council (NHBC)-registered new houses sold was £157,300, a decrease of £13,100 (7.7%) on the same quarter in 2010.
