Family escape stray dog attack but pet killed

A pet labrador killed by a pitbull-type dog, which attacked a family while they were walking in a County Antrim forest park, has been praised for saving their lives.

The attack happened in Randalstown Forest Park while the family of four and a foreign exchange student were out with their four dogs.

The dog attacked one of the family's Labradors and then turned on the mother who had been trying to get the dog off the family pet.

The father managed to get the dog off his wife, but it then turned on the couple's two children aged 10 and 13 and the 18-year-old student.

The boy's pet Labrador Troy intervened and continued to keep the attacking dog at bay until police arrived and shot it.

However, pet Labrador Troy was seriously mauled and later died from his injuries.

The family praised their dog for saving their lives and condemned the owner of the dog, which had no clloar or tags, for letting the animal run loose in the forest park which is regulalry used by families with small children.
