'Malicious' fires in west Belfast

Police in west Belfast are investigating two suspected arson attacks within the last 24-hours.

The first incident was reported at around 9pm yesterday evening, when emergency services were alerted to a blaze at a house in the Gartree Place area of Andersonstown.

No one was in the property at the time.

In a separate incident, fire crews were called to attend a fire at a house in the Falls Road area of the city at around 6am this morning.

No one was injured in either blaze.

An examination is being carried out at both sites and detectives investigating the incidents are treating them as malicious.

Police Probe Cause of Fires
A massive loss of stock at a Jet Ski centre has resulted from a weekend blaze in Comber, Co Down. Up to £1m worth of stock has been destroyed thanks to one of the walls of the building collapsing, which meant strong winds were fanning the flames, making the fire difficult to control.

Two Fires At Derelict Factory In Co Tyrone Being Treated As Arson
Two fires at a derelict factory in Co Tyrone are being treat as arson. The first blaze started at Herdman's Mill in Sion Mills on Friday, 10 June, which caused substantial damage. The second fire was started on Saturday, 11 June, at around 8.30pm, and caused further damage. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Smoking Is Biggest Cause Of Accidental Fire Deaths In NI
Smoking is the biggest cause of accidental fire deaths in Northern Ireland, according to the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). There have been 53 accidental fire deaths over the past five years and 22 of these were as a direct result of smoking materials.

NIFRS Warning Over Chimney Fires
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) is reminding the public of the dangers of chimney fires, after it attended 1,762 such fires last year, representing just over 7% of all incidents in 2013. Chimney Fire Safety Week begins today, and the NIFRS is reminding the public to ensure chimneys are swept and cleaned regularly.

Gorse Fires And Attacks On Firefighters Slammed
