Driver remanded over attempted murder charge

A 33-year-old man who appeared in court earlier today charged with attempted murder, has been remanded in custody.

James Henry Miller, 33, from Dunmore Drive in north Belfast, who was the driver of a lorry, which was involved in a police chase on the Falls Road area of west Belfast on Friday afternoon, was also charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop for the police and evasion of customs duty.

During the incident, the lorry, which is believed to have been carrying around 12,000 litres of suspected illegal diesel, struck a police vehicle, and officers fired a number of shots when it failed to stop in the Saint James' Park area of the city.

The Police Ombudsman's Office is to carry out an investigation into the shooting.

During today's hearing, a Detective Constable told the court he believed he could connect Miller to the charges against him.

Miller was remanded in custody and will reappear at the same court on December 4.

A defence solicitor told the judge that his client would be seeking High Court bail tomorrow.
