Minister agrees amalgamation of two schools
Education Minister, Maria Eagle, has today announced that she has agreed a proposal for the amalgamation of St James Primary School in Tandragee with St Joseph’s Primary School in Poyntzpass.
Only 13 pupils currently attend St James’ and 91 pupils attend St Joseph’s.
The decision was made following a request from the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS), acting on behalf of the Trustees of Tandragee Parish, the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB), that both schools should amalgamate with effect from August 31 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter.
A decision on the future location of the amalgamated schools will depend upon the conclusions of an Economic Appraisal that will examine all the viable options to meet the educational needs of the young children in these areas, however it is understood that it will initially be located on the St Joseph’s site with the intention that a newly-built school will be provided at a later stage.
Commenting on her decision, Maria Eagle said “The Board of Governors of these two primary schools, supported by the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) have brought forward this proposal in light of demographic decline and with the best educational interests of their pupils in mind. I am happy to approve this proposal that will provide for a more sustainable primary school, offering these young people a greater opportunity for social interaction.”
