Two die in Newry collision

The names of the two men who died in a road traffic collision in County Down on Friday evening, have been released.

They were 44-year-old Stephen Shields from Newry and 26-year-old Gerard Fearon, from Dromintee.

The collision, which involved three vehicles, happened just before midnight on the Dublin Road in Newry.

One of the victims died at the scene, while the second man died a short time later in hospital.

Three others were injured in the collision, however their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Sinn Fein MP for Newry and Armagh, Conor Murphy said that the news had shocked the community.

He said: "The news of another two deaths on our roads has left the entire community shocked and numbed. Death on our roads has become all too common news. Presently the thoughts and prayers of all are with the families of both killed."

It is understood that a number of people stopped at the scene, and police have appealed for witnesses to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.

The total number of people to have died on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year has now reached 102.
