Minister details £2bn infrastructure plans

NIO Finance Minister Ian Pearson has announced detailed plans for a range of projects under the Strategic Investment Programme.

The £2 billion Strategic Investment Programme was first announced on 11 December last, but the details of the projects are being announced for the first time today.

The plans include massive investment on waste water treatment works, schools, hospitals and transport systems, among which is £100 million earmarked for a Pilot Rapid Light Transport system for Belfast as well as funding for upgrading of the Westlink and the M1 approach to Belfast.

The Minister also announced the creation of the Strategic Investment Board, which was first unveiled in outline form at the launch of the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative (RRI) by the Prime Minister and the Chancellor alongside the then First Minister and Deputy First Minister in Belfast last May.

The Board will be responsible for guiding the £2 billion programme – the route map for upgrading Northern Ireland’s infrastructure.

Mr Pearson announced the plans at a meeting in Belfast City Hospital where he had earlier inspected progress on the new Cancer Centre a project made possible by funding from the RRI.
