Mother released on bail following two-year-old daughter's rape
The High Court in Belfast has heard that a two year-old-girl was raped in her County Antrim home last week.
The claim was revealed during a bail application by the child's mother. The 26-year-old mother, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with causing the child grevious bodily harm with intent and indecent assault.
A Crown lawyer told the court that an examination on the child had confirmed that she had been raped.
The lawyer said that the mother told police that her daughter was in the care of her paternal grandfather while she took her baby son to hospital. He was subsequently arrested and provided swabs but was released pending further enquiries. The child's father was also arrested but not charged.
The woman's defence lawyer said that his client knew nothing about the allegations and gave no explanation as to how her daughter's injuries were caused.
Lord Justice Shell released the mother on £1,500 bail and ordered her to have no contact with her children without the consent of social services who are now caring for them. She is also banned from having any contact with her paternal grandfather.

More Work Needed To Tackle Child Poverty
According to recent research more needs to be done to get children in Northern Ireland out of Poverty, with the British Government being blamed for the elimination target slipping. The charity Barnardos has revealed that two areas in Northern Ireland have two of the highest rates of child poverty in the UK.

Six-Year-Old Attacked By Rottweilers In Co Antrim
A six-year-old girl is recovering in hospital from serious injuries after being attacked by two rottweilers at a holiday home at Dervock, near Ballymoney in County Antrim. Sophia Kimpton needed plastic surgery at the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald, for multiple injuries to her head, arms and back.

Mother And Daughter Tied Up During Aggravated Burglary In Co Tyrone
A woman has been attacked during an aggravated burglary in Co Tyrone. The incident happened at a house on the Tattyreagh Road in Omagh on Wednesday evening, 11 January. The mother and her eight-year-old daughter were also tied up by two masked men armed with a hammer. The woman was hit in the face and had to receive medical treatment.

Mother And Daughter Rescued From South Belfast House Fire
A mother and daughter have been rescued following a fire at their home in south Belfast. The incident happened at a property in Kirkistown Walk in the Belvoir area in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Firefighters attended the scene and led the mother and daughter to safety.
