Attempted hijacking in County Antrim

A motorist in County Antrim has been threatened during an attempted hijacking incident on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 2.30pm on the Larne Road in Ballymena, when a man travelling in his Renault Clio was rammed from behind by a Volkswagen Golf with a foreign registration.

As the motorist got out of his vehicle to inspect the damage, the passenger got out of the other vehicle, produced a knife and demanded that he hand over the keys of his car.

The motorist threw the keys away, and the three occupants of the other vehicle searched for a short time before they got back into their car and drove away.

The car is described as a black Mark III left-hand-drive Volkswagen Golf with foreign number plates.

The man armed with the knife is described as being aged in his 30s, around 5' 10" in height, of medium build and with short black hair. He is thought to have been wearing a black bomber jacket, a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and white trainers.

Detectives in Ballymena have said that the area was busy at the time of the incident and have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed it, have noticed the car in the area, or have any information in relation to it, to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
