Man rescued from burning flat

A man has been rescued from a burning flat in Co Londonderry in the early hours of this morning.

He was pulled from the blaze after being found unconscious by two police officers who forced their way into the property at Loughanhill Park.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment and a female officer was also treated for smoke inhalation.

Elsewhere, detectives at Strand Road police station are investigating an arson attack on a middle floor flat in Londonderry, shortly before 7.30am on Sunday morning.

There were no casualties as a result of the blaze, however, extensive damage was caused to the flat.

Uniform police spotted the fire and forced their way into the premises to see if anyone was inside but the flat was unoccupied at the time.

However, a number of people from neighbouring flats had to be evacuated.

It is understood that the gutted flat had been used as a drinking den by youths.
