Fair Rates Campaign launches website

The Northern Ireland Fair Rates Campaign has today launched their new website.

Due to growing interest in the issue and calls from across Northern Ireland for more information, the campaign has developed the site with the ratepayer in mind.

The site, which can be accessed at www.fairratescampaign.co.uk contains information on rates reform, the recent Rates Order, the consultation on the same and campaign news.

The site also contains information on supporting and contacting the campaign.

Anne Monaghan, Independent Chair of the Campaign, said: “Our thanks go to the small team of volunteers who gave of their time, free of charge to develop this site in such a short space of time.

“The personal commitment of those involved in the campaign exemplifies the strength of feeling regarding this proposed legislation.

“More and more people are asking us for information as they do not believe the government’s statistics. For example, many people are questioning the figures given by the Minister, where he said a cap would benefit only 2700 people. We have collected over 5000 signatures from those opposed to the legislation and this will continue over the weeks ahead. The government must understand that the people of Northern Ireland do not accept the legislation and will oppose it strenuously.”

She concluded: “Many people are telling us they are not able to pay their rates bill and they will have to sell their homes or cancel their direct debits and standing orders and take their chances with the courts.”
