Illegal filling station dismantled in Newry

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have dismantled a filling station that was selling illegal fuel, following an operation to target the sale of illegal fuel in Northern Ireland.

In the joint operation, along with the PSNI on Wednesday, HMRC officers seized over 4000 litres of illegal fuel, forecourt pumps and storage tanks at the retail outlet in the Newry area.

A vehicle checkpoint was also set up in Newry yesterday morning and as a result, seven private vehicles were detected using illegal fuel with penalties of over £3,000 imposed on motorists for the return of their vehicles.

HMRC Head of Detection Northern Ireland, Maggie Eyden said: “The success of this operation is a result of our determined efforts, along with our partners in the Organised Crime Task Force, to disrupt and dismantle the illegal supply of fuel. Organised crime has a detrimental and harmful effect on all our communities as well as a damaging impact on our environment.

“This HMRC and PSNI operation shows how joint working, as part of the Organised Crime Task Force, can tackle road fuel and motoring offences.”

She added: “Motorists need to be aware of the real costs of buying cheap diesel. It puts honest filling stations out of business and robs public services of funding. HMRC is keen to work closely with local people and communities in the fight against crime and I would urge the public to contact our freephone hotline 0800 59 5000 and let us know of any fuel misuse or suspicious activities in their area.”
