Ombudsman's report 'uncomfortable for British state'

Northern Ireland Secretary of State Peter Hain has today said that the upcoming report on the police handling of a UVF murder in 1997, is likely to be “extremely uncomfortable for the British state.”

A report on the handling of the murder of 22-year-old Raymond McCord Junior is due to be published this week by the Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan.

The former RAF man was beaten to death and his body dumped in a quarry in Newtownabbey, County Antrim, in 1997.

Since the murder, his father – also called Raymond - has persistently campaigned for an investigation into the way in which the case was handled, after it emerged that there may have been police involvement in protecting the UVF men responsible for the killing.

Earlier today, Mr Hain described the murder as “an appalling stain on the history of Northern Ireland.”
