Peace process focus as Blair and Ahern meet

Prime Minister Tony Blair is to meet Irish Premier Bertie Ahern for talks on how to push forward the Northern Ireland peace process.

The two leaders are to meet on Friday 15 October at Chequers, Mr Blair's official country residence, to discuss ways of engaging political parties ahead of the November deadline for restoring devolved government at Stormont.

They are expected to agree dates for the beginning of intensive talks at St Andrews, Scotland, between unionist and nationalist politicians following the publication of the next report of the Independent Monitoring Commission.

An Irish Government spokesman said: "They will review the current political situation in Northern Ireland and give renewed focus and energy to their joint strategy for the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

The spokesman added: "They will focus in particular on the preparation for the process of engagement in the run-up to the deadline of 24 November, including the arrangements for all-party talks in Scotland next month."

SDLP leader Mark Durkan has met Irish Foreign Affairs Minister Dermot Ahern in Londonderry today to discuss the prospects for the latest round of talks.

He will press the Irish Government to move ahead with the North-South agenda and the Good Friday Agreement if there is no progress.

After a meeting with Mr Blair, he branded the talks in Scotland a waste of money and said any political negotiations should take place in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said at the weekend that a failure to achieve a deal in the coming months would see efforts to restore the power-sharing Assembly at Stormont put on hold until 2009, with General Elections planned for both the Republic and Britain.
