Paint bombs thrown at Harryville church
A Catholic church in County Antrim has been attacked by paint bombs.
Two devices were thrown at the front door of the Church of Our Lady in the Harryville area of Ballymena in the early hours of this morning.
Mass-goers endured weekly loyalist protests outside the chapel, which is based in a predominantly Protestant area of the town, between the period of 1996 and 1998.
Last night's attack has heightened tensions in Ballymena, where a number of homes have been targeted in suspected sectarian attacks over the last few weeks.
Declan O`Loan, SDLP councillor for the area, today said that the Harryville church has been left undisturbed for some time and added that "it is very regrettable to hear of this further attack".
Mr O`Loan continued by saying that he was not sure if last night's attack was connected to recent attacks on properties in the Ballymena area, and called on police to help to to bring an end to such incidents.
Geoff Calderwood, chairman of Harryville Ulster Scots Society, said: "We are working to make Harryville a better place and we do not want this sort of thing.
"As soon as the police forensics are finished at the scene we will help clean up the paint."
Earlier this year a paramilitary mural and flags around the chapel were taken down after cross-community talks were held.
