Serious assault in County Down
Detectives in County Down are appealing for information following a serious assault in Newry yesterday evening.
Police received reports of an injured man being seen at the entrance of the Kilbroney Forest Park in the Shore Road area of Rosstrevor at around 6.30pm yesterday.
The man was taken to hospital in a “serious condition” with facial and chest injuries.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and a possible scene of the attack, as they believe that it may have happened elsewhere.
Anyone who may have witnessed the attack, or have any information relating to it which may be of use to police, should contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man Shot In Co L'Derry
A man has been shot in the ankle in Co L'Derry. The paramilitary-style attack happened near the Creggan shops at around 7.45pm on Thursday, 07 December. The 41-year-old man has been taken to hospital to be treated, however his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Police described the shooting as "brutal and horrific".

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.

The victim, aged in his 40s, was assaulted by two masked men wielding hammers at his flat in Carmeen Drive on Tuesday night, 19 November. The injuries to his hand are likely to require surgery.
