Daily Ireland to cease publication

Belfast based newspaper Daily Ireland is to publish its final edition this Friday after 20 months of publication.

The pro-republican paper, which is owned by the Andersonstown News Group, was launched in February last year and provided daily news coverage. Earlier this year, the newspaper reduced its publication frequency to five days a week.

Daily Ireland managing director Mairtin O Muilleoir today said that the British Government's refusal to allow it to tender for advertisements was a major contributor to the collapse of the paper.

He said: "We have examined the implications of that decision and have concluded that it means it will be impossible for us to cover our costs going forward and so we have reluctantly decided to cease publishing from Friday."

Around 15 members of staff will lose their jobs.
