More than 85,000 people in NI hooked on alcohol
A survey released today has shown that more than 85,000 people in NI are dependent on alcohol.
The figures for the UK represent around 1 in 13 of the adult population and indicate that some 3,000,000 people are dependent on alcohol in the UK, twice as many as are hooked on all forms of legal and illegal drugs.
In Northern Ireland, 85,139 people (5% of the region's population) are reliant on alcohol, compared with 2,633,124 (5.3%) in England, 151, 673 in Wales (5.2%) and 276, 213 in Scotland (5.5%).
These statistics are among the startling facts to be discussed at a special Alcohol Concern conference – devoted to means of supporting people experiencing alcohol-related mental health problems.
Among possible solutions to be discussed at the conference will be the need for increased coordination between help-giving agencies and an injection of extra resources to tackle what has been described as a ‘Cinderella’ issue. The thorny problem of dual diagnosis – where people show signs of both mental illness and substance addictions – will also be addressed.
The conference, which will bring together experts from both mental health and substance misuse fields, aims to ‘provide delegates with practical tools and information to take back to their services and treat their clients.
