Man dead after flat fire

Police and the Fire and Rescue Service are investigating the cause of a fire in County Tyrone in which a man died.

The fire broke out at around 11.10pm in an apartment in the Campsie Avenue area of Omagh.

It is understood that the 55-year-old victim became trapped inside the property, however three other people who were in the flat at the time were able to escape.

Fire fighters managed to rescue the man from the blaze, but he died at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service today said that a smoke alarm had been fitted in the flat, although due to the severity of the fire, it was unable to conform whether it operated or not.

He added that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire is to be carried out and urged the public to make sure that they have a properly fitted and working smoke alarm.
