Talks expected over Daewoo jobs

Talks between management and unions are expected to be held following the announcement that 200 jobs are to be lost at the Daewoo electronics factory in Antrim.

The company announced on Monday that 205 jobs are to go, leaving only 80 employees at the plant which, at its height, employed over 1,000 people.

The firm blamed the jobs cuts on competition from countries where labour costs are lower and reduced sales in the European market.

The plant which was once the second largest manufacturer of video recorders in Europe, now produces set-top boxes and LCD televisions.

Union officials have said the jobs blow is devastating but has not been totally unexpected and are seeking a meeting with management to discuss redundancy packages and training.
