Council assure availability of City Hall

Belfast City Council has assured anyone who has booked a wedding or civil partnership ceremony between now and the end of June 2007 that their ceremony will go ahead as planned.

The assurance comes after what it branded "misleading media reports" about the proposed closure of the City Hall for major renovation work.

The City Council does plan to carry out a major programme of renovation and refurbishment to the City Hall, work on the building’s electrics and plumbing, and other work to make it fit for purpose for the future, but a spokespeson said that no final decision has yet been made on when this work will start. It is thought unlikely to commence before the summer of 2007 and no decision has been made on whether or not City Hall may be partially or completely closed during the work.

The spokespeson said: "Weddings and civil partnership ceremonies scheduled to take place before July 1 2007 will go ahead as planned. Ceremonies from that date onwards are being booked only on a provisional basis. Any changes will be notified directly to the parties concerned."

Further details, including arrangements for the registration of births and deaths, will be published on the Belfast City Council website website as and when they become available.
