Five pensioners targeted by robbers
Five pensioners across the province were targeted by robbers in separate incidents yesterday.
In Co Londonderry two disabled pensioners were robbed at their fold housing last night.
An 82-year-old woman, who is sight impaired, and a 74-year-old wheelchair bound man were robbed within minutes of each other at their fold accommodation.
Londonderry police inspector Bob Torrens said that when the woman answered the door the pair "pushed past her, went into the house and started searching the house".
"It was very frightening experience for her and they managed to get away with some cash," he said.
"They then moved on to another flat in the same fold occupied by 74-year-old man who is wheelchair bound. That poor man can't lock his door because people need to get access to him if he needs help – so a very cynical act indeed."
The second victim Joe Murphy said that the men claimed that had come to check the pilot light. They made off with between £70 and £80.
Ulster Unionist MLA David McClarty has described those responsible as “devoid of any vestige of humanity”.
The East Londonderry assembly member added: “Those who carried out these appalling offences show complete disregard for the elderly who are the most defenceless members of our society. Who knows what long term effect such terrifying ordeals could have?”
He also called on everyone who lives near an older person to take time to check on them.
In a more serious incident in south Belfast, 80-year-old Henry Nugent was beaten by a robber as entered his house on the Ormeau Road last night. The robber escaped with a sum of money.
South Belfast Ulster Unionist MLA Michael McGimpsey condemned the attacks saying there could be "no hiding place for those who attack and rob pensioners".
Mr McGimpsey said: “Those who prey on the most vulnerable members of society must be pursued vigorously and dealt with severely by the courts.
“These attacks on the elderly are becoming much too common and we must ensure that there is a suitable punishment.
“Sadly, we know too well the effect such terrifying ordeals can have on victims. The monsters who inflict such terror are spineless, heartless and the enemies of society."
And elsewhere, an elderly man and his wife discovered a thief in their bedroom of their Spring Road home in Omagh at around 6.30pm last night.
They grappled with the thief but he made off with a bag containing a sum of money.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
