DUP hit out at Republican rally

The DUP has said that a Republican parade in west Belfast to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hunger Strike, was an attempt to "politicise" sport.

Yesterday, hundreds of supporters descended upon Casement Park in the west of the city, to take part in a rally to remember the ten men who died during the Hunger Strikes in 1981 over political status at the Maze prison in County Antrim.

DUP Assembly member for west Belfast, Diane Dodds, said that the rally showed that Sinn Fein's attachment to paramilitarism remained in place.

Ms Dodds said: "One can just imagine the outcry if a unionist party were to stage a rally celebrating the activities of a terrorist loyalist organisation.

"Yet here we have a party which demands to be in government parading its paramilitary credentials in the face of those who suffered at the hands of the IRA for over 35 years."

She continued: "It should never be forgotten that the hunger strikers lauded by Gerry Adams and Sinn Fein/IRA were guilty of some of the vilest crimes against innocent people in this Province.

"They chose to die - their victims were given no choice.”

Meanwhile, the GAA's Central Council in Dublin had said that they had warned that if the rally was to go ahead at Casement Park, it would break all rules about staging political events in GAA grounds, however, it has been reported that the GAA's Antrim County Board, which is responsible for Casement Park, raised no objections.
