Exploded device found in County Down
Police in County Down have been attacked by missiles and petrol bombs, while attending the scene of a security alert yesterday.
The incident happened while officers were tasked to the Newry bypass close to the border with the Irish Republic.
Youths as young as 10-years-old threw up to 30 petrol bombs at police, and one youth was arrested.
Yesterday, the Real IRA - the paramilitary organisation responsible for carrying out the Omagh atrocity in 1998, said that it had left two devices in the area.
On their arrival to the scene, security forces discovered an exploded device, which had caused minor damage close to the railway line.
Trains were disrupted for a time, however normal services have resumed.
On Wednesday, police found a separate device which had also exploded.
The devices have since been removed for forensic examination.
A spokesperson for the PSNI said that detectives believe that the explosives were intended to injure officers.
On Friday, the Real IRA claimed responsibility for fire-bomb attacks on a number of businesses in the area on Wednesday.
Four businesses were destroyed and thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused to other premises.
