Nine charged over Derry protest

Police in Londonderry have charged nine men in connection with a protest at a leading American software manufacturer in the city yesterday.

The men, all aged in their their late 20s to early 60s, are accused of aggravated burglary with intent to cause unlawful damage and unlawful assembly.

They are expected to appear before Londonderry Magistrates Court later.

Yesterday, activists stormed the Raytheon offices in the Springtown industrial estate, while others staged a protest outside the premises.

The protesters, who were members of the Derry Anti-War Coalition said that "weapons manufactured by Raytheon were being used by Israel to bomb Lebanon."

Although the company is a leading weapons manufacturer, which makes Patriot, Tomahawk, Cruise and Sidewinder missiles, the Derry factory is understood to be involved in making software for air traffic control systems and not weaponry.
