Security alerts in Newry

Police have revealed that a security alert in the Bridge Street area of the Newry city was ongoing this afternoon.

The social security office has been evacuated and Army Technical Officers are currently at the scene.

An earlier incident at Merchants Quay area of County Down has ended. Army Technical Officers were tasked to the scene to examine the area, however nothing suspicious was found and the alert has been declared a hoax.

An alert on the railway line near the Cloughoge Bridge area of the city was also declared a hoax.

In a separate incident, the railway line between Newry and Dundalk has been closed while claims of a suspicious device were examined.

The alerts follow four overnight arson attacks by dissident republicans on businesses in the city.
