Reappointment for NI Consumer Council
The government has today announced the reappointment of Mr David Mann to the Board of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland.
Mr Mann will take up his position today and will serve for a term of three years.
David Mann currently Campaigns Officer for the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and was a member of the former Northern Ireland Consumer Committee for Electricity.
He was Chairman of Lisburn Access Group from 2001 to 2004 and is now Vice Chairman.
He has previously served on telecoms advisory bodies and does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.
Commenting on the reappointment the Enterprise Minister, Maria Eagle said: “I would like to acknowledge the commitment Mr Mann has already shown on behalf of Northern Ireland consumers. His experience and expertise will be of considerable benefit to the Consumer Council at a very challenging and exciting time.”
The General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland (GCCNI), was established in 1985 under the terms of the General Consumer Council (Northern Ireland) Order 1984, and is funded by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment.
The aims of the GCCNI are to: promote and safeguard the interests of all consumers in Northern Ireland; campaign on behalf of consumers for the best possible standards of service and protection; undertake research and data collection; give advice and information and issue publications; and deal with individual complaints about passenger transport, coal, natural gas and electricity.
Under the provisions of the Order, the Board of the GCCNI shall consist of a Chairman, a Deputy Chairman and no more than 16 members.
Current membership stands at 16 and includes a Chairman, Deputy Chairman and 14 members.
All appointments and reappointments are made on merit, and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for the political activity of appointees/reappointees (if any) to be published.
Mr Mann has not carried out any political activity in the past five years.

NI consumer body launch online help
Most shoppers in Northern Ireland do not have a good enough knowledge of their rights and the General Consumer Council has launched a consumer website as part of action to tackle the problem. The problem was highlighted recently when shoppers were asked “Is it legal for shops to display no refund signs?” Three out of four NI shoppers said yes.

Confident consumers essential to modern economy
Trade Minister Sir Reg Empey has launched the Consumer Strategy for Northern Ireland in an attempt to "drive up business performance" by better informing consumers. The strategy was presented at the inaugural meeting of a new Consumer Councils’ Forum, made up of consumer groups, focused on strengthening and promoting consumer representation.

Help The Aged hit out at gas price hike
Help the Aged today called on the government to intervene to prevent Phoenix Natural Gas from increasing its prices by 25% in Northern Ireland. Phoenix confirmed on Monday that it wanted to increase its bills in the autumn because of the increase in high global energy prices as well as the rise in price of home heating oil.
