SF set to join Policing Board says US Congressman
Sinn Fein are on the verge of joining the Policing Board, according to a US Congressman who is close to republican thinking in the United States.
US Congressman Peter King, who has represented Long Island, NY, since 1992, said that it was "only a matter of time" before the party signed up to the Policing Board.
Sinn Fein have voiced their opposition to the Policing Board, saying that the reconstituted PSNI was still not reflective of the Patten recommendations.
SDLP Policing Board member Alex Attwood said he would welcome Sinn Fein's joining the board.
However, he added: "The SDLP has achieved more policing change in its 15 months on the board than in the previous 80 years put together. It is clear that the SDLP jumped at precisely the right time to implement Patten and Sinn Fein will jump too late."
As all the major political parties, except the DUP, converge on Washington for St Patrick's Day celebrations, it had been reported that US President George Bush would refuse to meet Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams. However, the president's special adviser on Northern Ireland Richard Haass has denied those reports.
