Malicious fire at north Belfast school

Police in north Belfast are treating an overnight fire at a Primary school as "malicious."

The incident happened just before 2am this morning at St Mary's Primary School on the Shore Road in Greencastle.

Four fire appliances attended the scene and it took around two hour to bring the blaze under control.

It has been reported that the fire started in a sports hall and spread to the roof, causing serious damage to the building.

Martin Cassidy from the Fire and Rescue Service said: "At this stage, the indications are that the fire was started deliberately. It is very sad to see that young children's places of education are being targeted in this way."

A police spokesperson said that investigations to establish the cause of the blaze are to continue today.
