Two men appear in court on charges of child abduction
Two men have appeared in Belfast High Court on charges of planning to abduct a child.
One of the men has been named as Henry Termonia, of Castle Park, Dervock, who was refused bail on a charge of conspiring with another man to kidnap an unknown child.
The men were arrested in Portstewart earlier this month following a police surveillance operation. Syringes, gloves and tranquillising drugs were found in the car, along with sweets and toys. Parents from the community reported seeing the car regularly parked outside a children's play area.
Defence counsel Francis Rafferty said that Mr Termonia could explain the presence of every item in the car, and that the syringes and other medical equipment found in the car related to his occupation as former laboratory technician. The defence also stated that the needles were part of a first-aid kit, and that the tranquillisers belonged to Mr Termonia's personal prescription for depression. The cuddly toy and sweets belonged to his grand-daughter, the lawyer added.
