Irish citizens still awaiting rescue in Lebanon

Around 50 Irish nationals are believed to be still awaiting rescue in Beirut, following a concerted effort by both Ireland and the UK to evacuate people from the Lebanese capital.

Around 80 people have already arrived back in Ireland, following a series of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon which have left over 270 people dead. The offensive broke out last week following the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah fighters and the firing of missiles on targets in northern Israel, which included Haifa, the country's third-largest city.

The evacuees were driven from Beirut to Damascus by bus, before being flown to Dublin via Dubai, with many of the group praising the Irish government for the speed of the rescue operation.
