Fire crews bring Co Armagh blaze under control
A bush fire which threatened to destroy large part of Slieve Guillion Forest Park in County Armagh has been brought under control by firefighters.
Over 100 firefighters were called in to tackle the blaze, with teams arriving from Lurgan, Dungiven and Magherafelt. The fire, which is thought to have started early on Wednesday afternoon, soon covered over 20,000 metres of land on the side of the mountain, before being contained in the early evening. The site was also monitored overnight by fire crews.
Speaking today, district forest manager, John Watson, said he was relieved that firefighters had been able to deal with the conflagration before it spread to further areas.
"It could have been a very serious fire had it got out into the open mountain," he added.

Derry forest fire brought under control
Fire-fighters in Londonderry have managed to bring a major forest fire under control. The fire broke out in the Broughderg Forest close to Six Towns, near Draperstown, around 3pm yesterday. Approximately 90 fire fighters from across the province were involved in the operation, and the fire is reported to have spread to an area of around 40-acres.

Tollymore Gorse Fire Sets Mountain Ablaze
A large gorse fire in a scenic area of Co Down has provoked an appeal by a local politician. SDLP leader and South Down Westminster candidate Margaret Ritchie has asked for anyone with information about a gorse fire at Tollymore Forest Park to pass it to the police immediately.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said the blaze on the Drinnahilly Mountain close to Tollymore Forest park, started on Wednesday, 18 July. Eight fire appliances and 46 firefighters are working to bring the fire under control.
