Police treat attack as 'attempted murder'

A sectarian attack on a man at a barbecue in Londonderry at the weekend is being treated as attempted murder.

A 29-year-old man is in a critical condition with severe injuries in hospital following the attack which occured at Chapel Road in the Waterside at 3.40am on Sunday morning. Two of the man's friends were injured in the attack. One received severe bruising and the other a broken jaw.

A police spokesperson said that up to eight men were involved in the incident.

Chief Inspector Ken Finney said: "I utterly condemn this despicable act of violence which was carried out by unknown thugs whose sole intent was to cause serious injury. As a result a young man lies seriously injured in hospital with multiple injuries."

He appealed for local people to assist police in identifying the perpretrators who, he said, had come from the direction of Irish Street and Bann Drive.
