Drumcree parade protest ends peacefully

The annual Orange Order parade at Drumcree on Sunday has passed off peacefully.

Marchers handed in a letter protesting the decision by the Parades Commission to prevent the march from continuing into Portadown via the Garvaghy Road.

Police had mounted a low-key security operation to block the road in the usual place at the foot of the hill a few hundred yards from Drumcree parish church.

Police said that it had been a "positive day" and said that the peaceful parade had been efficiently marshalled and controlled.

In a statement made after the march, Craigavon District Commander, Acting Chief Superintendent Alan Todd said: "This has been a positive day for the whole of Portadown.

"There was considerable optimism before the parade and quite clearly the optimism was justified.

"The Orange Order parade and protest has been orderly, peaceful and well marshalled."

Addressing the marchers the Portadown District Master of the Orange Order, Daryl Hewitt, said that he was disappointed by the decision by the Parades Commission to prevent the march from processing along the Garvaghy Road into Portadown.

The last three years have seen a peaceful conclusion to the parade, which previously had witnessed violent clashes and a heavy security presence to prevent the Orangemen and supporters from returning to Portadown along the Garvaghy Road following a church service in Drumcree.
