NI soldier to receive full military honours

A Northern Ireland soldier who was killed in Afghanistan, will be buried today with full military honours.

Captain David Patten, 38, who was from Aghadowey, near Coleraine was killed in the southern province of Helmand, as he served with the special forces.

Captain Patten and a Royal Marine soldier died after a rocket-propelled grenade struck the vehicle they were travelling in, last week.

It is understood that Mr Patten was due to return home a week before his death, however had decided to stay on an additional week to help his unit.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said that the two men had four Taleban prisoners with them when the attack happened - two were killed in the blast, while the others escaped.

Captain Patten's coffin will be carried by members of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, and he will be laid to rest beside his father who was a major in the former Ulster Defence Regiment.
