Girl seriously injured in house fire

A ten-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being rescued from a fire at her home in west Belfast.

The blaze broke out at the house in Woodvale Avenue at around 9.40am and police, fire and ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene.

It has been reported that the child was rescued by builders who were working at a site nearby.

The girl was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where she is being treated for serious burns and the effects of smoke inhalation.

It is not yet known how the blaze started, however it is understood that it may have been caused by a cigarette which was not extinguished properly.

The Fire and Rescue Service is still at the scene and officers are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire.
