Trio of schools to close due to lack of pupils

Three Primary Schools are to close this year due to falling enrolment numbers.

The schools are All Saints Primary School Ballela, which received no applications for P1 for 2006/07 school year, St Mary’s Primary School Aghadowey, which received four applications for P1 and Lisnamurrican Primary School Broughshane, which had only seven applications for P1.

Commenting on the decision, Education Minister, Maria Eagle said she had carefully considered all the comments and representations made to her on the proposals.

The Minister said: “I fully appreciate that these schools have played important roles in community life for a number of years but this must be balanced against demographic change and the associated demand in their respective areas.

"We have more than 50,000 empty desks in our classrooms and this is set to rise further. It is vital that all children are given the best possible start to life and that is why Sir George Bain has been appointed to undertake a strategic review of education.”

The Minister said that the position of these schools was not sustainable nor was it in the best educational interests of the pupils to keep them open.
