Fishermen rescued from Irish sea
Four County Down fishermen have been rescued off the Irish coast after their boat caught fire last night.
The men, all from Kilkeel, abandoned the burning Noronya vessel about 20 miles off the coast of Dublin at around 12.45am.
Belfast Coastguard were alerted and an operation to rescue the men was launched.
It is understood that the Coastguard had asked for a rescue helicopter from Dublin to head to the scene and launch the lifeboat from Howth.
The crew were then rescued by a fisheries research vessel Corystes.
No one was injured during the fire, which is understood to have started in the engine room of the Noronya.
A spokesman for the Coastguard said that a rescue helicopter had to be called in as conditions were "ironically too calm."
He added that if the crew had not managed to escape, they would have ended up in the water, which would have made the rescue operation more difficult.
He added: "We were in constant contact with the skipper of the Noronya throughout this incident.
"There was an excellent response to our mayday relay broadcast from various vessels in the area.
"Search and rescue units and other vessels in the area proceeded immediately to the scene."
He concluded by saying that the Coastguard were extremely pleased that all four crew members are safe and added that he wished to thank all involved in the rescue operation.
