Hain pushes Stormont cross-party committee
A cross-party committee to deal with the restoration of devolved government in Stormont is to be set up, according to the Northern Ireland Secretary of State Peter Hain.
At yesterday's meeting of the Assembly the idea of a cross-party committee was put forward by the Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey, as despite the DUP's Ian Paisley's rejection of his nomination by Sinn Fein to take on the post of First Minister, it is still possible for the parties to debate issues.
Announcing a Restoration of Devolution Committee, Mr Hain said that he thought that a way could be found around the various concerns raised by the parties. He called for all the parties' "leadership figures" to sit at the table and find a way forward.
However, Sinn Fein leaders have declared that they will not be participating in a "Hain Assembly" that is merely a "talking shop."
The DUP has not only declined to accept the nomination of First Minister, but has also rounded on arch-rival the UUP for accepting a party with affiliations to a loyalist paramilitary group.
