Boat builder eyes overseas markets

Valkyrie Craft, Canoes and Classic Boats, a new Coleraine-based company, is being assisted by Invest Northern Ireland to develop innovative products for export.

The company, formed by John Wilkinson, a local school teacher, has received Export Start support from Invest NI and is located at the Causeway Enterprise Agency at Loughanhill Industrial Estate in Coleraine. It is designing, manufacturing and supplying a range of timber canoes and traditional styled sailing/rowing boats for the fast growing marine leisure marketplace in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Kevin Helferty, Invest NI’s North West Local Office Manager, says: “Our support will enable this new company to develop the capability and capacity to become a successful manufacturer of canoes and medium sized sailing boats.

“The company has been formed to exploit a gap in the market that is now developing strongly for these types of boats and should offer a substantial business opportunity. The project will also bring new skills to the Coleraine area. Initially, the company expects to sell 25 per cent of its output to markets outside Northern Ireland. It will provide two new jobs by the end of 2007."
