Campaign highlights back injury risks
Preventing bad backs at work lies at the core of a major campaign by HSENI and the District Councils.
During the month of June teams of inspectors and environmental health officers will be checking out workplaces across Northern Ireland to see if backs are being protected. They will be challenging employers to show they are taking the right steps to prevent back injuries.
In announcing the campaign today, Peter McKie, Chairman of HSENI said: “Back injuries can occur across many work situations ranging from shelf stacking in supermarkets to care workers in homes. Against this background HSENI and the District Councils have joined forces to raise the profile of this problem among employers to ensure that they are taking the right preventive measures. Much of this is commonsense but unfortunately in many instances the risks are not properly assessed, resulting in a large numbers of back injuries being reported every year.”
Rosemary Campbell HSENI’s campaign co-ordinator added: “During our June Backs NI campaign we will not only be looking out for and stopping those bad work practices that injure peoples’ backs but will also be advising and educating employers so that they can take appropriate corrective action.”
Barney Heywood from the Chief Environmental Health Officers Group (CEHOG) said: “This is the biggest inspection initiative undertaken jointly between the HSENI and the District Councils and it reflects the high priority we are giving to this health issue.”
Employers can obtain a free information pack on how to assess manual handling risks and identify solutions to reduce the risk of back injury in the workplace.
Packs can be ordered by phoning HSENI’s One-2-One Helpline 0800 0320 121 or by contacting the local District Council Environmental Health Department.
Information can also be downloaded from www.workingforhealthni.gov.uk.
Free advice on managing back pain at work and rehabilitation is also available from HSENI’s Employment Medical Advisory Service on Tel: 028 90 408004.
