Illegal dumpers fined £12,500

Illegal dumping in Newtownards has been penalised with fines exceeding £12,500 today.

William Corrie of Crossnamuckley Road, Newtownards, Leslie Wright of Movilla Road, Newtownards and Brikkiln Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd. of Heather Road, Londonderry were fined at Laganside Crown court for breaches of waste management legislation.

Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) officers investigated an unlicensed site, owned by Mr Corrie in Newtownards on 16 October 2003. A substantial quantity of waste excavation rubble, clay together with a quantity of biodegradable wood, plastic, metal, sponge, plastic bags and green waste was deposited.

Vehicles owned by Mr Wright were observed entering and leaving the site at Crossnamuckley Road. Further investigation by EHS officers revealed that 21,000 tonnes of excavation waste had originated from the new Safeway construction site at Bangor. The waste was taken to the unlicensed site off Crossnamuckley Road along with 1,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste which was sourced from Mr Wright's licensed site off Movilla Road.

Brikkiln, Wright and Corrie pleaded guilty on waste charges. William Corrie was fined £2,500, Leslie Wright was fined £7,500 and Brikkiln Civil Engineering Contractors Ltd. was fined £2,500.
