Hain names Assembly members as deputy speakers

The Secretary of State, Peter Hain, has today announced that he was appointing members from the DUP and Sinn Fein, as deputy presiding officers of the Assembly.

The DUP's Jim Wells and Sinn Fein's Francie Molloy, have been given the posts in preparation for the recall of the Assembly on Monday.

Peter Hain also formally confirmed the appointment of Eileen Bell MLA as Presiding Officer of the Assembly under the terms of the Northern Ireland Act 2006, which received Royal Assent on Monday.

The Secretary of State also published the Standing Orders under which the Assembly would operate.

He said: “With the appointments of Presiding Officer and two deputies, and the publication of the Assembly’s Standing Orders, everything is in place for the Assembly’s recall on Monday.

“This is an important step in the process of building towards the restoration of devolution in Northern Ireland."

Mr Hain concluded by saying that he understands that all the parties involved with the Assembly will want to do all they can to ensure that power can be handed over to locally-elected politicians, directly accountable to the people of Northern Ireland.
