Man arrested during raid of illegal fuel plant

Customs Officials have discovered a major fuel laundering operation at a sheep farm in County Londonderry earlier today.

One man has been arrested during the joint operation by Revenue and Customs officers and the PSNI near the village of Park, near Claudy this morning.

It is understood the plant, contained a storage tank capable of holding around 30,000 litres of laundered fuel, which could result in a potential loss in taxes of up to £9,000 a day, with an estimated £250,000 per month.

HM Revenue & Customs also seized an undisclosed sum of money, a number of vehicles and around 20,000 litres of laundered fuel.

Customs have described the laundering operation as significant and "professionally run."

Illegal fuel laundering is doing more damage than just costing the Exchequer lost revenue. It emerged yesterday that damage in Co Tyrone, at Aughnacloy Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), was caused by by-products of a suspected fuel laundering operation - where agricultural 'red' diesel is stripped off the colouring and sold on as legitimate fuel.

Customs close Co Tyrone fuel laundering plant
Customs officers have dismantled an illegal fuel laundering plant in Co Tyrone in a joint operation with PSNI. The second plant to be closed down was located at premises in the Benburb area had the capacity to process around 35,000 litres of fuel per week.

Three fuel laundering plants discovered last week has demonstrated the risks fuel fraud presents to the public. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers investigated a building destroyed by fire, unsafe fuel tanks transported on roads and half a tonne of dangerous waste indiscriminately dumped.

Man Charged Over Suspected Fuel Laundering Plant In Co Armagh
A man has been charged with 24 waste and contamination offences in Co Armagh. The 52-year-old was arrested following the discovery of a suspected fuel laundering plant at Loughcross Road in Crossmaglen. The suspected plant was found during a joint operation with the police and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency on Thursday morning.

Largest-ever fuel laundering plant found in Dundalk
Customs officers in the Republic have scored their biggest success against fuel laundering racketeers following the discovery of one of the most extensive oil laundering plants ever found in the south. Up to 20 customs officers descended on the plant, which lies about two miles outside the border town of Dundalk, at 6am on Monday March 11.
