Archbishop Eames announces retirement
Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, has announced that he is to retire at the end of 2006.
The announcement was made after his presidential address to the Church of Ireland synod which opened in Armagh today.
Dr Eames, 69, has said he will step down on 31 December after 30 years of service to the church.
Ordained in 1964, appointed as Bishop of Derry and Raphoe in 1975, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh and the Church of Ireland Primate of Ireland in 1986.
Speaking today after the announcement, he told the members of the church's General Synod that he had made the decision to retire after "much prayer, thought and discussion."
Dr Eames said among his memories were "the dark years of the Troubles in this part of Ireland.
"I saw the heights of compassion and nobility as well as the weakness and evil of human character. Now the struggle to build a new society of justice, equality and reconciliation demands renewed faith and renewed courage," he said.
Dr Eames concluded by saying that his successor will experience a life of constant demand, and constant responsibility, but a life of constant joy and privilege.

New Church of Ireland Primate named
The Church of Ireland has named the man who will succeed Archbishop Robin Eames as the new All-Ireland Primate. The Right Reverend Alan Harper, the current bishop of Connor, who was one of the favourites to take over from Dr Eames, will now be known as Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland.

The leaders of Ireland's four main churches have met with Prime Minister Tony Blair today in Downing Street. Church of Ireland Archbishop Robin Eames, Catholic Primate Archbishop Sean Brady, Dr Russell Birney of the Presbyterian Church and Methodist President the Reverend Winston Graham all described their meeting as "positive".

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams is to meet with Church of Ireland Primate Archbishop Robin Eames at Stormont next Monday. Lord Eames will be joined by four Church of Ireland Bishops from Northern Ireland, who will meet with the Sinn Fein delegation – after having already met with the UUP, the SDLP and the Alliance Party on previous occasions.

Call For Free Vote Regarding Same-Sex Marriage
There are reports that two churches in Northern Ireland have called for the region's politicians to be allowed a free vote regarding same-sex marriage. It is understood representatives from both the Catholic church and Presbyterian church have said party whips should be removed on the issue when it is next debated at Stormont.
