Four arrested in connection with assault on teenager

Four men have been arrested for questioning following a serious assault of a teenager in County Antrim at the weekend.

15-year-old Michael McIlveen and a friend were walking home after going to get a pizza, when they were confronted by a gang of men, in an entry in the Garfield Place area of Ballymena, between midnight and 1am on Sunday.

It is understood that the victim's friend managed to escape, however when they caught Michael, the attackers beat him with baseball bats.

He managed to make his way back home, before being taken to Antrim Area hospital, where he remains in a critical condition on a life support machine.

Police have described the attack as particularly vicious.

A investigation team spent several hours yesterday examining the scene of the attack for forensic evidence.

Detectives have confirmed that the arrests were made in the Ballymena area last night and have said that the men are currently being held for questioning in relation to the incident.

Police have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or who may have any information in relation to it, to contact them on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
