Temporary NICCY Commissioner appointed

The Secretary of State, Peter Hain has today announced that Barney McNeany will be the temporary replacement for the Commissioner for Children and Young People in Northern Ireland.

Mr McNeany will take over the role on an interim basis, following the death of his predecessor Nigel Williams, who died in March 2006 following a two-year battle with cancer.

It is understood that the search is under way to find a permanent replacement for the late Commissioner and it is likely that the province's children and young people will play a vital role in choosing a suitable person to take over the position, as was the case in Mr William's appointment.

Commenting on the new temporary Commissioner, the Secretary of State said: “Following the recent tragic death of Nigel Williams, Northern Ireland’s first Commissioner for Children and Young People, I am keen to ensure that the rights and best interests of children and young people here continue to be effectively safeguarded."

Mr Hain continued: “To this end, I have appointed Barney McNeany, Chief Executive of the Commissioner’s Office, as Commissioner for Children and Young People for Northern Ireland on an interim and temporary basis. Mr McNeany has agreed to carry on the excellent work started by Nigel Williams until his replacement is appointed through the public appointments process.”

The new permanent Commissioner is expected to take up post by Autumn 2006.
