Institute footballers forced to leave Derry

Two Institute FC players have been forced to leave Londonderry following threats on their lives.

French and Belgian nationals, Bertrand Ketchanke and George Ngoma-Kasanda were threatened by three men wielding baseball bats at their home in the Waterside area of the city on Friday evening.

The assailants also threatened to shoot the footballers if they didn't leave the area.

The two black footballers have also been receiving intimidating calls to their mobile phones telling the men that if they do not leave, they would be shot in the legs.

The men have said that they will leave Derry because they feared for their lives.

Their men's solicitor, Kevin Casey, has said there is no history of racism in football in the province and that he hoped that this was an “isolated incident.”

He added that the players did not understand why they had been targeted as they had always had a positive experience from the people of Derry.
