Department of Agriculture vets examine dead swans

A popular tourist site in County Antrim has been sealed off following the discovery of a number of dead swans in the area.

The remains of the animals were found on the River Bann near Portglenone, and vets from the Department of Agriculture are examining the birds in case they died from the deadly bird flu virus.

It has been reported that Council workers found a swan, which had recently died, earlier this morning. They then later found three other partly decomposed birds nearby.

The find follows the discovery of a confirmed case of the H5N1 bird flu in a swan found dead in Fife, Scotland within the past 24 hours.

The government is ready to put measures in place in Northern Ireland in case the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus hits the province.

These will include a 3km exclusion zone and a stringent decontamination programme.

So far, only two out of the 13 cases of 'bird flu' in the European Union have been reported to have been transferred to domestic poultry and today the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) have said that there is no need for people to panic at this early stage.

While a number of dead birds have been examined by vets in recent months no trace of the H5N1 strain has so far been found.
