Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival launches programme

A diverse and vibrant programme for this year’s Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival (April 27 – May 7) will see 120 events take place in 30 venues across the quarter.

A special ‘World’ marquee in Custom House Square will include music from Cuba, Africa, India and Siberia, with artists such as The Bollywood Brass Band, Black Umfolosi and Siberian ‘throat singers’ Huun Huur Tu appearing.

Comedy continues to be a major feature of the Festival programme, with appearances this year by fast-rising comedy superstar Dara O’Briain, the ever provocative Mark Thomas, and hilarious new shows from John Shuttleworth, Mark Steel and Lucy Porter.

An extensive theatre programme will feature Raw Life's electrifying new version of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest’.

Music, of course, will form the backbone of the festival, as legendary saxophonist Courtney Pine continues his unique journey through Jazz, Soul and Hip-hop, Julian Cope looks back over a thirty year recording career and Terry Hall from The Specials serves up a feast of Ska and Reggae classics.

Singer-songwriter Richard Hawley makes his Northern Irish debut riding on the success of his album ‘Coles Corner’ and winner of the Choice Music Prize Julie Feeney will perform music from her acclaimed CD release, ‘13 Songs’.

Folk and Roots are well represented with two guitar legends sharing a stage, Bert Jansch and Davey Graham, who rewrote the rulebook for guitarists in the 60’s. Elana James comes to the Festival taking time out from her day job as the fiddle player with Bob Dylan’s touring band.

In Traditional Arts, the great Celtic Fiddle Festival will raise the roof of the World marquee and Liam Ó’Maonlaí of The Hothouse Flowers will play a rare solo concert of traditional singing.

The festival continues its commitment to cutting edge film and visual art in a variety of locations around the city centre. The film programme this year looks at some of the major iconic figures from rock, including documentaries on Nick Cave, The Flaming Lips and Townes Van Zandt.
